An area of outstanding natural beauty, part of the NATURA 2000 conservation network which catalogues areas within Europe that have a scarcity or fragility of flora or wildlife.  L'île Saint-Aubin is known for its important role in river management and is only 2kms from the city centre. It is a rich and colourful patchwork of flood meadows populated by a number of important species of birds including the corncrake. A renovated farmhouse and a tavern provide a valuable rest stop in this fertile agricultural landscape. The farmhouse houses exhibitions and hosts events to raise awareness of the importance of the area and the other 1700+ NATURA 2000 sites throughout France. The island is accessible from April. Leave your car in the car park by the River Mayenne; cross over on the ferry bridge by bike or on foot .
